A Compelling Need

With waterborne illnesses the leading health concern in the remote villages of eastern Nicaragua’s wilderness region, our organization is focusing its efforts on providing safe drinking water to these isolated communities. This critical, life-saving project promotes good health by drilling deep wells, which tap into underground reservoirs of pure water, and by educating communities about sanitation, hygiene, water contamination and disease transmission.

Community surveys and national statistical data from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health support the conclusion that water is the principal source of disease and illness in our target communities. In fact, in 2013, the consumption of unhealthy water precipitated 11,987 visits to health centers in our target area of 12,000 inhabitants and 13 small communities.
